To the Mayor and City Council of Covington, Indiana:

We, the undersigned citizens, visitors, customers of businesses, taxpayers, business owners, property owners, and stakeholders of Covington, respectfully petition our local leaders to pursue policies that strengthen our community, improve quality of life, and restore public confidence in local government.
Covington is a community rich in history, character, and potential. We believe the future of our city depends upon transparent governance, responsible stewardship of public resources, economic opportunity, and a commitment to serving all residents fairly and openly.

Therefore, we call upon our local government to:

**Increase Livability**
Invest in infrastructure, public spaces, parks, sidewalks, and community amenities.
Encourage housing opportunities that meet the needs of families, seniors, and young professionals.
Improve the overall appearance, safety, and attractiveness of our community.

**Promote Government Transparency**
Conduct public business in a manner that is open, accessible, and understandable to citizens.
Publish economic development agreements, incentives, and major contracts in a timely manner.
Encourage meaningful public participation before major decisions are made.

**Reduce Favoritism and Cronyism**
Ensure all public decisions are based on objective standards and community benefit.
Eliminate perceptions of preferential treatment for politically connected individuals or organizations.
Maintain fair and equal treatment for all residents, businesses, and property owners.

**End Backroom Decision-Making**
Promote openness throughout the decision-making process.
Provide adequate public notice and opportunity for citizen input.
Conduct negotiations involving public assets and taxpayer funds with maximum transparency allowed by law.

**Strengthen Existing Public Services**
Focus resources on core municipal functions including public safety, infrastructure, sanitation, and community maintenance.
Establish measurable performance standards for city services.
Continually seek efficiencies that provide greater value to taxpayers.

**Protect Taxpayer Interests**
Carefully evaluate all public expenditures, incentives, and development agreements.
Prioritize projects that demonstrate clear public benefit and measurable return on investment.
Safeguard public assets for future generations.

**Foster Community Trust**
Build a culture of accountability, responsiveness, and public engagement.
Listen to citizen concerns respectfully and act upon them when appropriate.
Restore confidence that local government serves the entire community rather than specific interests.

**Our Vision**
We envision a Covington where government is transparent, economic opportunity is abundant, public services are excellent, and every citizen is treated fairly and honorably. We believe that honorable leadership, open competition, and citizen engagement are essential to building a stronger future for our community.
Local officials should publicly acknowledge this petition and work collaboratively with residents and other stakeholders to implement these principles for the benefit of present and future generations.
