Demand For Fairness in Presidential Debates: A Call to Action

Demand For Fairness in Presidential Debates: A Call to Action

We are writing to express our deep anger over the presidential debate held on September 10th, which was supposedly “moderated” by ABC News.

The event was an outright display of bias and unfairness, denying the American people a true chance to evaluate the candidates' qualifications and policies. We demand immediate actions to correct these blatant injustices and ensure a fair and balanced platform for all candidates.

The moderators showed obvious favoritism towards one candidate, which is a slap in the face of democracy. President Trump faced a barrage of fact-checking questions, while Vice President Kamala Harris was given a free ride without similar scrutiny. This blatant bias created an uneven playing field; one candidate was unfairly besieged, while the other was allowed to spread misinformation unchallenged. This isn't just unfair, but it also violates the fundamental principles of a free and fair election.

The moderators failed to ask Vice President Harris any tough follow-up questions regarding her positions on vital issues. This lack of accountability allowed her to dodge hard questions and ignore critical topics. Meanwhile, President Trump was continually pressed on his policies and statements, often without sufficient context.

Moreover, significant issues were either omitted or selectively addressed during the debate. For instance:

  • The assassination attempt on President Trump should have been discussed as a significant event that deserves reflection.

  • The withdrawal from Afghanistan that led to the loss of THIRTEEN American lives and the subsequent lack of transparency from the administration also went unanswered.

Additionally, Vice President Harris failed to respond to a crucial question about the current quality of life compared to three and a half years ago, when Trump was in office. The moderators did not hold her accountable for her lack of response.

There is serious concern regarding a potential conflict of interest involving one female commentator, who is associated with Vice President Harris' sorority. This raises doubts about the impartiality of the debate and potential bias in commentary.

We demand that the Commission on Presidential Debates and ABC News take immediate steps to address these unacceptable issues and ensure a fair, balanced debate process. Specifically, we want:

  • A thorough review of the moderators' performance, with a commitment to fair questioning in future debates.

  • A guarantee that both candidates will face the same standards of fact-checking and accountability.

  • A commitment to cover all essential issues in future debates.

  • A review of the commentary team to ensure impartiality and eliminate potential conflicts of interest.

  • A prohibition on scripted questions designed to provoke specific responses or controversy.

  • Transparency regarding the debate preparation process, including the selection of questions and the criteria used to evaluate candidate responses.

Furthermore, we expect the debate moderators to take responsibility for their actions, apologize, or face discipline for their obvious bias. We also call on ABC News to implement concrete measures to ensure that future debates are conducted fairly and impartially.

We will not sit back and watch our democracy crumble under such blatant bias. We will continue to demand accountability and fairness in our political process to uphold the integrity of our elections.

Sincerely,
Julie Collier
