We have trusted Carmel Clay Schools for a long time, but as parents and the community, how do we know if Carmel Clay Schools ("CCS") leadership is actually performing and teaching our children? Fortunately, through ILEARN (and formerly ISTEP) testing administered by the state, student academic proficiency and district performance is measured and published. Looking at the cumulative results provides visibility into the effectiveness of teaching state academic standards.
Between 2014 and 2021, the number of CCS students who achieved minimum proficiency in English language arts ("ELA") dropped by 30%, from 94% to 66%. The number of students with minimum proficiency in math fell by 30%, from 96% to 67%. The proportion of students who demonstrated minimum proficiency in both subjects dropped from 93% to 56%, an astounding 40% decline. Put another way, in 2021 almost half of all CCS students were not proficient in both English and math!
This massive educational failure is the direct result of the promotion of Critical Race Theory ideologies during instruction time, which by it's very nature is anti-merit and anti-achievement. The superintendent with the support of the school board has also diverted vast resources to pay for positions and resources promoting racial hatred, sexualization of children, and division in the classroom. Carmel has every resource available to support our children's academic achievement, including TWO active referendums.
Superintendent Michael Bereford is failing our children. Please sign this petition to support his immediate resignation.
